Bivy Sacks

A bivy sack (bivousac sack) is mainly used by those outdoors people who are backpacking, bicycle touring or kayaking where weight is a major consideration.
Using a bivy sack is not for everyone but many like the experience of sleeping under the stars.
What to consider when purchasing a bivy sack:
- Weight - usually weighs about two pounds
- Pack size - you also want your outdoor accommodation to pack in a small space whether it be a backpack or bicycle pannier
- Waterproofing - the bivy sack does both with a waterproof bottom layer and waterproof/breathable top fabric to keep off the rain and/or bugs depending on the design (some are better at this than others).
- Mesh covering - some designs offer a top mesh covering to protect you from those pesky insects
- Opening - a bivy sack includes an opening for your head at the top. Some styles require you to pull the drawstring tight when it rains and others offering some additional overhanging fabric.
The model you choose will depend on your comfort level with the available space as some are no more than a sleeping bag cover while others are almost like a mini tent although you will not be able to sit up.
