Who this ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Backpacking Tent is ideal for

As it tapers at the foot end, it’s not big enough for two sleep pads side-by-side. Works for two backpackers if one is a child or you are very close to the person. Like many backpacking tents it is best for one person plus some gear.

What customers say about the ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Backpacking Tent

There were many positive reviews for the Alps Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Backpacking tent. One reviewer said that setup was very easy, it took maybe 5 minutes or so. Inside was a little cramped for two people, just make sure you’re very close with whoever you’re sharing the tent with, because you’ll pretty much be sleeping elbow to elbow. We were both able to use a sleeping pad with a little bit of overlap in the middle. I’m about 6’1 or so and I did notice that when I laid down on my back my feet would graze the mesh at the end of the tent, not really a big deal though, at least not for me. There was plenty of headroom so I was able to sit up without my head touching mesh.

Another reviewer stated as far as rain protection goes, I was pretty impressed with this tent. We endured very heavy rain on and off throughout the evening and night. The tent kept us very dry.

Many reviewers mentioned this tent has good features. Two doors and vestibules is a big one for me. It’s a pain to be climbing over someone to get in or out. There are openings on both ends of the fly to help with ventilation. They also put a clear area in the fly so you can see out without unzipping it. There is a handy gear loft in the top and a gear pouch in the middle on the head end–both handy for flashlights and stuff that you need easy access to.

5 star tent I decided to wait two years to review this tent so I could speak more to its longevity. I’ve probably used the tent 20 times in the two years since I’ve had it. The tent has held up very well and I couldn’t be happier with it. Its still as good as new with no rips or leaks. I did buy the floor saver when I bought the tent for another $18. I think it would be a roll of the dice without it. The tent sets up very easily once you’ve done it once or twice. One of my favorite things is it packs up easily as well. I’ve noticed with ‘backpacking gear’ they try and make everything as small as possible, so small you spend 10 minuets trying to stuff your mummy bag in the stuff sack. This tent packs up very small in the stuff sack provided, but it isn’t a chore getting it all crammed in there. I’ve used the tent in temperatures as low as 20 degrees and it stayed warm inside as the rainfly stretches all the way down to the ground. I am 6’1″ 180 and usually have an 85 pound lab in there with…

Design flaw, but great service It’s a good tent except for one major design flaw. The back plastic window is not durable and will cause leaks after packing more than a handful of times. Other than that, it is a great tent that I’ve used for backpacking and kayaking from 100 degree summer nights to below freezing temps.*Update – I contacted Alps Mountaineering about the problem and they responded within 30 minutes to tell me they were sending a replacement immediately. How can I not give a product 5 stars with that kind of service? Highly recommended.

ALPS Quality I’m giving it 5 stars for now but I will update if needed after I use it. I set it up in the yard and it seems to be another ALPS Mountaineering quality product. It’s light weight and free standing and set up was easy and quick, about 7 minutes rain fly and all. The directions are attached to the inside of the stuff bag if you need them. It seems very sturdy and is roomy enough for 2 however I am single and ordered the 2 man just for the extra room. Good ceiling height and has a storage shelf and mesh pockets for storage and a light loop for hanging a small light. Seams are all sealed and the floor seems thick enough to stand up to the riggers of camping however I did order the footprint and it fits perfectly. Nice sized vestibule and the buckles should keep the wind and weather out. It is light enough for backpacking and It packs down to about 18″ long and 6 1/2″ wide when packed in the stuff bag. I wrap my ALPS Mountaineering footprint and my ALPS Mountaineering sleeping pad…
